Interaction with native speakers as a bridge to build confidence

Abstract

Despite structured English instruction, many EFL learners have limited opportunities for authentic communicative practice, which restricts the development of real-world speaking confidence and fluency. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to understand students’ perceptions of how direct interaction with native speakers impacts their confidence and communicative competence. Specifically, it sought to identify the types of interactions that build trust, examine the confidence students develop through authentic communication, and describe the benefits of participating in communicative experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five experienced EFL students and analyzed to determine how these experiences contributed to their English learning in academic, professional, and personal areas. The results showed that regular interaction with foreigners significantly improves students’ confidence, listening comprehension, speaking fluency, pronunciation, and overall communication skills. Participants emphasized that real-life conversations expose them to more natural language use, authentic everyday expressions, and new cultural perspectives that are difficult to replicate in a typical classroom. They also agreed that these interactions create communicative environments that offer constructive feedback and consistent practice. The study concludes that authentic interaction with native speakers should be strategically incorporated into English instruction, as it promotes communicative competence and long-term language development. English teachers and language mentors are therefore encouraged to include conversational activities, collaborative international projects, and virtual meetings that foster the use of English in authentic and natural settings.
